Tool Management
Handling Cutting Tools for Effective Tool Management

In any production and manufacturing processes, cutting tools are significant parts of the operational lifeline. In big and small-sized shops, the same importance is also found. Tools are considered huge investment and are subject to the normal wear and tear and depreciation cost. And to make the most out of this enormous investment, effective and efficient tool management is extremely important to ensure that cutting tools are in the right place at the time they are needed the most. While most companies and shops have proper tool inventory systems up and working, only a number maintains competent cutting tool inventory management. Nothing is particularly damaging to a business than finding a cutting tool lost in the frenzy of shop operations. This

is the primary reason tool inventory system is needed in managing shop apparatus, including cutting tools.

Whatever type of business – be it manufacturing, production, shop works – management of tools can help lessen the intensity of the work, reduce bottlenecks and improve processes. By adopting inventory systems that track the movements of tools in and out of the toolbox or crib, operational efficiency will be enhanced and cleared of unwanted barriers that only hamper the growth of the business. The kind of system in place determines how well cutting tools are handled. And how these tools are borrowed and returned reflect also the kind of inventory systems utilized. In its absence, it would then be easy for pipe cutter tools to get lost while the workers are going through the motions.

While most industries have advanced inventory management systems to keep record of the flow of cutting tools, small time businesses do not have the benefit of these technological help and instead rely on the old school tool flow system. More often than not, these aged systems do not keep pace with the

ever demanding shop processes, and are sometimes inadequate to make a follow-up of what tools came out and went in, and who borrowed what cutting tools and when. This confusion will most likely lead to the stoppage of work and eventually spoil whatever progress the business has made. Most of all, the insufficiency of tool management system will result to the disorder of tools as they are not tracked down properly.

There are a lot of inventory systems commercially available that allow business to integrate their cutting tools inventory in one efficient system by means of software. Most of these computer programs adopt a systematic asset tracking of every existing cutting tool by assigning distinct bar codes for each item. This provides a well-organized flow of cutting tools, from purchase to the actual use. Once new cutting items arrived, they are immediately assigned unique codes, incorporate them into to the system and store in the tool crib. Whenever somebody wants to use a particular cutting tool, the details are listed down – name of the tool, code, name of borrower, date borrowed, etc – facilitating an orderly shop operation.

The most beneficial feature about inventory software is that it offers strict control mechanisms to ensure that cutting tools are properly managed in a very systematic and organized way. If tool access is controlled, it would then be easy to locate them without going through the usual basic investigation which are very tedious and time consuming. Plus, it will also enable shops and businesses to determine when and how much cutting tools are required and when they are needed. This way, work is never compromised. Although this may proved to be laborious at the first installation of tool management systems, the long-term benefits would outweigh the initial labor as shop operations and processes become organized, well-structured and regulated to attain its fullest potentials.
